The Effect of Group Music Therapy on Depression and Anxiety for Hospitalized Schizophrenic Patients

|
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of music therapy on depression and anxiety for hospitalized schizophrenic patients. Twenty patients participated the group music therapy at the psychiatric hospital located in Chungnam. They were randomly assigned either to experimental group or control group. Experimental group participated the 60-minute group music therapy once a week for 10 sessions. The results are as follows; Depression for the experimental group reduced and the result of Mann-Whitney test showed statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test. Anxiety for the experimental group reduced, and the result of Mann-Whitney test showed statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test. It was found that group music therapy is effective in reducing depression and anxiety for patients with schizophrenia. Based on the result, more systematic approach must be taken to apply music therapy to reduce depression and anxiety of patients with schizophrenia.
